Matthew Taylor

Hello! My name is Matthew, and I'm a student at MIT pursuing a Master of Science in Music Technology and Computation. I received a B.S. in Electrical Science and Engineering from MIT in May 2026.

I'm interested in numerical modeling, audio electronics, digital signal processing, FPGA design, and music production. Below you can find a link to my resume and information about some of the projects I've worked on.

FPGA Electronic Drum Processor >

A musical instrument system that uses an FPGA to implement a real-time electronic drum sampler, audio effects processor, and Ethernet audio interface. The total cost of the system hardware, including the FPGA development board and two custom printed circuit boards (PCBs) is less than $500. Visit the main project page here.

Microstrip Circuit FDTD

A custom finite difference time domain (FDTD) solver for Maxwell's equations designed to simulate microstrip radio-frequency circuits. Supports convolutional CFS-PML absorbing boundaries, perfect electrical conductors, lossy and lossless dielectrics, and lumped elements (resistors, inductors, and resistive voltage sources).

The simulator was used to model linearly polarized and circularly polarized patch antenna designs. S11 parameters simulated using the FDTD solver were in close agreement with HFSS simulations and fabricated designs.

LED Dance Floor

A dance floor made for my hall at the MIT dorm East Campus. It contains over 11,000 LEDs and is capable of displaying GIFs at 30 FPS or playing games like Pong and Tetris. The dance floor LEDs are controlled using an FPGA, which receives animations from a Linux system over Ethernet.


Modular Synthesizer >

A DIY modular synthesizer containing six analog voices, plus effects such as delay, spring reverb, and distortion. A USB MIDI interface provides 8 channels of pitch, gate, velocity, and CC outputs. I have used the synthesizer in the studio and to perform live at events like Colorado Modular Synth Society's "Freq Boutique" and the MIT Gala. Visit the main project page here.

Music Production >

I produce electronic music under the name Tailoring and recently released my first full-length album, Empathy Test, on most major streaming services. The album contains a mixture of ambient and dance music recorded using my modular synthesizer. Learn more here.
